The excavation of Mogalmari Bauddha Vihara began in 2003-04 under Prof. Asok Datta of the University of Calcutta. Successive excavations revealed an extensive monastery with brick walls, monks’ cells, gateways, stupas, pradakshina paths and exquisite stucco art. Archaeological evidence traced the earliest Vihara to around the 6th century CE, with major rebuilding during the 9th-10th centuries CE. Terracotta seals, inscriptions, Buddhist hymns, coins and images established Mogalmari as an important centre of Buddhist learning and worship. The discovery of seals naming Yajñapindika Mahavihara and Mugalayika Viharika gave the ancient monastic complex its historical identity. In 2015-16, the remarkable discovery of 95 bronze images further highlighted its rich Buddhist heritage. Today, Mogalmari stands as one of West Bengal’s significant early medieval Buddhist archaeological sites, preserving centuries of spirituality, scholarship and art.

The monument's restoration is poorly executed, with the glass railings and wooden pathway being particularly disastrous. The museum's appearance is unattractive, and its facade needs updating to respect the site's significance. An architect with expertise in such restoration work should be consulted.
